And I don't just mean that they change you. A lot of people can change you–the first kid who called you a name, the first teacher who said you were smart, the first person who crowned you best friend. It's the change you remember, the firsts and what they meant, not really the people. Sara Zarr
About This Quote

In the book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Charlie is a teenager who never felt he fit in with his high school peers. He didn't have any kind of best friend and was often bullied by other students. He did have a couple close friends that he did care for a lot but he didn't place any importance on them being his best friend because they weren't very different from him. He also never thought of himself as being smart or having any special talent not to mention being very shy and introverted.

In the book Charlie believed he would never change or get better or be happy because he felt like he was always going to be an outcast no matter what. Then something happened that completely changed everything for Charlie and in the process it changed him too. One night in his bedroom, Charlie was sitting by himself when an unknown person entered and sat beside him and simply started talking to him about how it felt like he was never heard or noticed before. He talks about how this person helped him see things differently.

When I read this I thought it would be because he became friends with someone new but in reality it was something much more powerful because this person changed Charlie's outlook on life and made his life much more enjoyable because of it. This person changed Charlie's life for the better just by talking to him and giving him some encouraging words that made him feel better about himself and gave him reasons to try harder than ever before which resulted in Charlie becoming happier than ever before.
